The Links at Firestone Farms of Columbiana, OH

Good layout- challenging from the Black tees ( ~ 6500 yards), 1/2 of the greens did not hold- even with a 60 degree wedge. But, for $37, for 18 including cart, on a Sunday after 2PM - well worth it - about 4 1/2 hours to play. Easy drive from just north of Pittsburgh (about an hour) . Nice staff, everything looks new including the fairways that are not lined by trees in many places- but I asked and the place is 13 years old. A few blind tee shots giving those who have played here before a huge advantage.Links style fairways, many traps and several water hazards. Speeds of greens is good = speedy but not crazy.

I have to think this course suffers from location. As you exit US-22 and drive through Hopedale, you'll pass an assortment of defunct businesses that make the area look like a ghost town. It's truly in the middle of nowhere. The course is never busy and I've heard they struggle to survive. It's a shame, because the layout is wonderful. Yes, there are a couple of hokey holes, but there are some beautiful gems such as #2, #3, #13, #14 and even #17.

Rain has the greens and fairways suffering a little right now. That is why I had to score the fairways a little below average, but the greens roll nice and hold your approach shots. There are problems with crabgrass, but no worse than other courses in these price range with this amount of traffic and greenskeeping resources. The owner is often in the shop and seems like a cool guy. Highly recommended for golfers in the area.

Get out and play Castle Shannon. Keep this course alive and thriving. I'm only in the area on occasion, but I would play here much more often if I were able to do so.

Sweetbriar Golf and Pro Shop of Avon Lake, OH

Sweetbriar is a great little course, in that it has a bit of everything for everyone.
There's quite a few courses out this way, and most of them are nicely maintained, but Sweetbriar truly has some fantastic views and designs. They have 3 courses- the Sweetbriar 18, the Original Legacy 9, and the newly added Legacy 9. Each course is set up differently- the Sweetbriar course is more your sprawling green hills, whereas the legacy 9's have a more woodland appeal to them, with wetlands.
Rates are very fair; between $30-40 for the Sweetbriar, and about $50 for the Legacy 9's. They are close to 90 and the turnpike, and the Legacy restaurant onsite can make it hectic at times. I generally go at first open (6am) when I want to concentrate and work on my game; their later hours are great as well, and my wife likes tagging along, so we usually go with her sister and her husband. Both girls are still learning but the course are friendly enough for her to tackle, and still challenging enough to keep me on my toes. The Legacy tends to be a more challenging course, and is my favorite, hands down.
Sunset specials during the week are a great deal, and it's usually very low key, so no one is breathing down our neck, and the girls can take as long as they need. When we're done, we go over to legacy's patio and have a veer and dinner. Staff is always friendly, service is prompt, and the courses are always in tip top shape. .

Valleaire Golf Club of Hinckley, OH

This course is my favorite course on the west side. Golf conditions have improved significantly in recent years. Greens and fairways are watered regularly, Most area courses are loaded with hard pan lies, not here. Friendly staff! New clubhouse is said to be planned for the very near future. Great value for your golfing buck, especially if you join their email list for promos and discounts

Henry Stambaugh Golf Course of Youngstown, OH

The course was terrible. Just because it's a 9 hole course doesn't mean it has to be a cow pasture. It is very easy to lose your ball on fairway because the grass is so high and if you are off the fairway, forget it. It was a decent layout, but I didn't like how you had to cross the roads. The cart path needs paved. The greens had big brown patches. Tee boxes could use some love. I didn't like all of the dead trees/branches all over the place also.

I play this course fairly regularly as I have a friend who lives across the street. The course was in great condition last week when I was out there, the fairways and greens were both in great condition. For a public course that doesn't look like much when you're pulling in, its definitely worth having a go!

Mills Creek Golf Course of Sandusky, OH

i had not been to mill creek golf course for some time. a friend invited me to play a round of 18 holes, his treat. it was marvelous. i was not aware of the improvements that had been made. the clubhouse was remodeled. the layout was not as i remembered. it seemed larger and greener than last time i was there. it had rained the previous day but the fairways and the were greens drained very nicely. it did not appear to have rained at all. it was very crowded but the number of holes and the large size of the course accomodated the players well. i had a wonderful time.

Hidden Valley Golf Course of Delaware, OH

This is a smaller course, but it is very well maintained, has an extremely friendly staff, and is an absolute steal at $9.00 for nine holes on a weekend. I have been playing this course off and on since I was a kid, and I have never been disappointed. It is fun, laid back, and an all around fun place to play!
